Sambhal Police Implement Enhanced Security Measures Ahead of Friday Prayers

Police conducted flag marches near Shahi Jama Masjid on Thursday, ahead of Friday prayers. Authorities assured that strict security measures are in place to prevent any incidents. The security has been further tightened due to a court hearing scheduled for Friday. Additional Superintendent of Police Srish Chandra led the police teams through partially reopened markets, which had been closed since violence erupted on November 24.

Sambhal Police Enhance Security for Prayers

Markets near the mosque have started reopening, but business owners report significant losses. Ajay Kumar Gupta, a bullion trader, noted that despite the wedding season, customer visits have drastically reduced. Kushanawaz, who owns an electronics shop, expressed difficulties in earning due to the unrest. Rajeev Varshney from the Federation of All India Trade Union highlighted that fear keeps people away, affecting businesses.

Security Measures and Legal Proceedings

Thirty police teams have been deployed to identify and arrest those involved in the violence using CCTV footage. Over 100 images of suspected rioters from Kot Garvi have been released. Despite markets and schools reopening, an Internet ban was extended by 48 hours as a precaution. Police have arrested 31 individuals and registered seven FIRs related to the violence.

The violence in Sambhal began on November 24 after a court-ordered survey at Shahi Jama Masjid led to clashes. Protesters gathered near the mosque, resulting in stone pelting and arson. Four people lost their lives, and many others were injured. The unrest stemmed from claims that a Harihar temple once stood at the mosque's site.

Community and Legal Reactions

Local authorities met with Muslim clerics to discuss Friday prayers. Imam Aftab Hussain Warsi expressed hope for peace, while Mohammad Alauddin Ajmali urged residents to pray at local mosques and requested lawful arrests only. The advocate commissioners' report is expected in court on Friday, allowing both parties to respond.

Gopal Sharma, representing the Hindu side in court, stated that they would decide their strategy after hearing the Muslim side's arguments. Shakeel Ahmed Warsi, representing the Muslim side, confirmed their preparedness and intention to request case documents to support their claims.

Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh mentioned that families of those killed filed cases against unidentified individuals. An injured person is receiving treatment in Moradabad, where their family also lodged an FIR. Vigilance extends beyond Sambhal to all five districts under Moradabad division.

Impact on Local Economy

Business owners near the mosque reported substantial financial losses due to the violence. Ajay Kumar Gupta claimed losses ran into crores for shop owners in the bullion market alone. Despite reopening efforts, fear continues to deter customers from visiting these areas.

Police have named several individuals as accused in connection with the violence, including Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq and Sohail Iqbal, son of local Samajwadi Party MLA Iqbal Mehmood. Additionally, 2,750 unidentified persons are also listed as accused.

The situation in Sambhal is gradually stabilising with increased security measures and community efforts towards peace. Authorities remain vigilant across districts to ensure safety and prevent further incidents.
