Rampur's Samajwadi Party Unit Seeks Akhilesh Yadav Candidacy, Opts for Poll Boycott
In a significant development from Rampur, the Samajwadi Party's district leadership has expressed a strong stance regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The district president, Ajay Sagar, alongside the incarcerated leader Azam Khan, has issued a statement highlighting their grievances against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the alleged poll violations and excesses towards SP leaders. This announcement came after a notable meeting between SP president Akhilesh Yadav and Azam Khan in Sitapur Jail, where the forthcoming elections were discussed.

The statement from the Rampur unit of the Samajwadi Party underscores their initial desire for Akhilesh Yadav to represent the constituency in the Lok Sabha elections, citing "special circumstances" in Rampur as a compelling reason for this request. However, it appears that Yadav has declined this request, leading to a broader discussion on whether to participate in the elections under the current conditions.
According to the statement, the district leadership is considering boycotting the elections due to what they describe as a compromised electoral process, where "officials are working to ensure the defeat of Khan's party anyhow by blatantly violating the poll panel guidelines." This bold move underscores the tensions in Rampur, especially after Azam Khan's disqualification following his conviction in separate cases, which subsequently led to the BJP winning both the Rampur parliamentary seat in a by-poll and the Suar assembly seat.
Azam Khan's legal troubles stem from a 2016 incident involving the forced demolition of a house in Dungarpur area, leading to his conviction alongside three others. Despite these challenges, the SP's statement reflects a resilient stance, noting their history of both electoral victories and defeats. The final decision on whether to contest in Rampur will rest with party president Akhilesh Yadav.
As of now, while the BJP has confirmed Ghanshyam Lodhi as its candidate for Rampur, the Samajwadi Party, in alliance with Congress, has yet to announce its nominee. This decision comes at a critical time for the party as it navigates through legal battles and electoral strategies in an increasingly complex political landscape.
The unfolding situation in Rampur is a testament to the intricate dynamics of local politics and its impact on national elections. With allegations of poll violations and strategic boycott considerations, it highlights how electoral battles are not just fought on policies but also on principles and perceptions of fairness. As developments continue to emerge from Rampur, all eyes will be on how these decisions will shape the political discourse and electoral outcomes in this key constituency.
