Sahitya Akademi Recognises 23 Authors at 2024 Bal Sahitya Awards for Contributions to Children's Literature
The Sahitya Akademi honoured 23 authors with the 2024 Bal Sahitya Awards on Thursday for their notable contributions to children's literature in various Indian languages. Each recipient was awarded a copper plaque and a cash prize of Rs 50,000, as stated in an official announcement following the ceremony.

Prof. Suryaprasad Dixit inaugurated the event, stressing the importance of creating engaging and visually appealing children's literature. He highlighted the need for content that resonates with child psychology, sparking curiosity and interest in subjects ranging from adventure to inspiring life stories.
Recognising Literary Excellence
Among the awardees were Ranju Hazarika for Assamese, Dipanwita Roy for Bengali, and Bharjin Jacob Mosahari for Bodo. Other winners included Bishan Singh Dardi (Dogri), Gira Pinakin Bhatt (Gujarati), and Krishnamurthy Biligeri (Kannada). The awards also recognised Muzaffar Hussain Dilbar (Kashmiri) and Harsha Sadguru Shetye (Konkani).
Nandini Sengupta's award for English was accepted by a representative. Some recipients, such as Devendra Kumar (Hindi), Shamsur Rahman Faruqi (Urdu), and Lal Hotchandani (Sindhi), could not attend due to health issues. The awards were presented in Lucknow for the first time, a city celebrated for its cultural richness.
Promoting Cultural Heritage
Sahitya Akademi Vice President Kumud Sharma expressed gratitude to the awardees, highlighting the role of children's literature in nurturing creativity and psychological resilience. Secretary K Srinivas Rao noted that this was the first occasion these awards were held in Lucknow, a city renowned for its vibrant cultural heritage.
The Bal Sahitya Akademi awards were initiated in 2010 by the Sahitya Akademi, established in 1954 as India's National Academy of Letters. This institution serves as a central hub for literary dialogue, publication, and promotion across the nation.
The event celebrated authors like Narayanji (Maithili), Unni Ammayambalam (Malayalam), Kshetrimayum Suvadani (Manipuri), Bharat Sasne (Marathi), Vasant Thapa (Nepali), Manas Ranjan Samal (Odia), Kuldeep Singh Deep (Punjabi), Prahlad Singh Jhora (Rajasthani), Harshdev Madhav (Sanskrit), Dugai Tudu (Santali), Yuma Vasuki (Tamil), and Pamidimukkala Chandrashekhar Azad (Telugu).
The awards underscore the significance of children's literature in fostering imagination and learning among young readers. By recognising these authors, the Sahitya Akademi continues to promote diverse narratives that enrich India's literary landscape.
