Russia Ends Recruitment of Indian Nationals for Military Operations from April
The Russian embassy expressed condolences on Saturday for the unfortunate deaths of Indian nationals during Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine. The embassy noted that since April, the recruitment of Indians into its armed forces has ceased.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha on Friday that 69 Indian citizens are currently awaiting release from the Russian Army. According to official data, eight Indians have died while serving with the Russian Army.
Coordination Between Moscow and New Delhi
The embassy stated that Moscow and New Delhi are working closely to identify and discharge Indian nationals who voluntarily joined contractual work in the Russian military and now wish to return home. The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation stopped recruiting citizens from several foreign countries, including India, since April.
The issue of Indians recruited into the Russian Army has become a point of contention in India-Russia relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised this issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their talks in Moscow last month, emphasizing the need for the early discharge of Indian nationals.
Embassy's Response to Media Queries
The Russian Embassy in New Delhi has received numerous media inquiries regarding Indian citizens serving in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The embassy acknowledged these queries and expressed deep condolences to the Government of India and the families of the deceased.
The embassy assured that all contractual obligations and compensation payments will be fulfilled entirely. It also clarified that at no point has the Russian government engaged in public or fraudulent schemes to recruit Indian nationals for military service.
The concerned agencies in both countries are working together to ensure the early identification and discharge of Indian nationals who voluntarily contracted for military service in Russia. This coordination aims to address the concerns raised by both governments effectively.
The embassy reiterated its commitment to resolving this issue, stating that all necessary measures are being taken to facilitate the safe return of Indian nationals who wish to leave military service in Russia.
