Bharatanatyam Prodigy Rukmini Chatterjee Receives Prestigious French Honour

New Delhi, Mar 26 - In a prestigious ceremony held at the French Embassy in New Delhi, Bharatanatyam dancer Rukmini Chatterjee was honoured with the insignia of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters). This accolade is awarded by the French government to individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts, culture, and literature, or have played a role in promoting these fields in France and around the world.

Rukmini Chatterjee Honoured by France

The Ambassador of France to India, Thierry Mathou, highlighted Chatterjee's considerable contributions to the Indo-French cultural exchange through her artistic achievements. "Rukmini Chatterjee has not only showcased Indian dance traditions in prestigious French venues but has also been pivotal in facilitating cultural exchanges between France and India," Mathou stated. He praised her for being an Indo-French artistic icon, whose efforts have significantly strengthened the cultural ties between the two nations.

Chatterjee's training under Mrinalini Sarabhai has led her to perform at renowned venues in France such as Maison des métallos in Paris, National Theatre of Odeon, and Châteauvallon theatre. Her performances have been part of major international festivals including Quartier d’été in Paris, Festival of Arles, Biennale of Lyon, and Lille 3000 festival.

Having made Paris her home since 1990, Chatterjee is a fluent francophone and has performed across the globe, including various venues in India. Reflecting on her recognition, Chatterjee expressed that she views this award as a milestone in her ongoing artistic journey. "My work aims to explore and celebrate humanity's universal aspects," she remarked, emphasizing the importance of art in bridging divides and fostering unity in today's fragmented world.

Chatterjee is also known for founding the international dance festival ‘Connections’ in 2014 at the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts. The festival aims to showcase artistic excellence by bringing together outstanding performances from around the world to India. Following the Covid pandemic, she embarked on a new creative project titled Danced Stories - a series of short films that explore human emotions through dance and music.

This recognition serves not only as an acknowledgment of Chatterjee's individual talents and achievements but also underscores the vital role of cultural exchange in enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation between countries. Through her work, Rukmini Chatterjee continues to be a significant figure in promoting cross-cultural dialogue and understanding between India and France.
