Rising Threat To Indian Diplomats In Canada Amid Diplomatic Tensions, MEA Responds

In the midst of escalating tensions between India and Canada, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has raised concerns about the increasing threats faced by Indian diplomats in Canada.

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the security of Indian consular staff in Ottawa has become a pressing issue, with reports of heightened surveillance and intimidation.

Surveillance of Indian Diplomats: A Growing Concern

At a media briefing, Jaiswal revealed that India had formally requested enhanced security for its diplomats in Canada, particularly for consular operations, but these requests had not been met by the Canadian authorities. Over the past year, there have been multiple incidents of harassment, threats, and intimidation directed at Indian diplomats, raising alarm within the Indian government.

"We have observed an increase in the threats to our diplomats in Canada," Jaiswal stated. He further highlighted that Indian diplomats were being placed under surveillance, including audio and video monitoring, which India considers a violation of international diplomatic conventions. This issue was raised with the Canadian government by India on several occasions.

Diplomatic Strain Amid Recent Violent Incidents

The worsening diplomatic relations come on the heels of a violent incident in Brampton, Canada, where a temple was attacked. India strongly condemned the attack and called on the Canadian government to uphold the rule of law and bring the perpetrators to justice. The violent episode has only fueled the ongoing diplomatic standoff between the two countries.

Communication Interception and Allegations

The Indian government had previously accused Canada of engaging in surveillance of Indian consular staff, including intercepting their communications. The MEA stated that these actions were in clear violation of diplomatic protocols and consular conventions, making it difficult for Indian officials to operate in a safe and secure environment.

Ongoing Diplomatic Row: India and Canada at a Standstill

The diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have reached a critical point, particularly following Canada's accusations regarding the involvement of Indian government officials in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Indian government swiftly rejected these allegations, calling them "absurd" and unfounded.

Nijjar, who was labelled a terrorist by India, was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia last year, an event that has become a flashpoint in the diplomatic discord. In response to the allegations, India withdrew its high commissioner and other officials from Canada, expelling six Canadian diplomats in a tit-for-tat move. Canada also retaliated by expelling six Indian diplomats.

Increased Violence and Extremism Complicates the Situation

The MEA spokesperson emphasized that India's diplomatic and consular personnel in Canada were already operating in a highly volatile environment, marked by extremism and violence. The actions of the Canadian government, according to India, have only worsened the situation and jeopardized the safety of its diplomats.

No Faith in Canadian Commitment to Diplomats' Safety

India has expressed its lack of confidence in the Trudeau administration's commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian diplomats. The strained relationship between the two countries shows no signs of easing, and both governments continue to maintain hardline stances on the ongoing issues.

India has also made it clear that it will not engage further with Canada unless Ottawa provides concrete evidence to back its allegations regarding the involvement of Indian officials in Nijjar's killing.

As tensions continue to escalate, the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada remains a significant concern, and the diplomatic row between the two nations shows little prospect of resolution in the immediate future.
