RIP Sharda Sinha: Renowned Singer Had Lost Her Husband Weeks Back

Yesterday, the renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha, known for her contributions to Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi music, passed away at AIIMS-Delhi following a health setback linked to her ongoing battle with cancer. The 72-year-old was celebrated for her deep-rooted cultural songs, especially those associated with the Chhath festival. Having been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2017, a cancer affecting the bone marrow, Sinha's condition took a turn for the worse, necessitating advanced medical intervention.

Sinha had lost her husband, Braj Kishore Sinha, who passed away after a brain haemorrhage caused by a fall. The couple, who had celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary earlier this year, have been enduring a period marked by health struggles.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda had visited AIIMS last night to inquire about Sinha's health. He had engaged with senior health officials, emphasizing the need for the singer to receive the highest standard of care. Additionally, Nadda reached out to Sinha's son, Anshuman, offering support during this challenging time. This gesture underscores the government's recognition of Sinha's significant cultural contributions.

Sharda Sinha's illustrious career has not only enriched the folk music scene in Bihar but has also left a lasting impression on Bollywood. With timeless hits in movies such as "Maine Pyar Kiya" and "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun," as well as the memorable "Taar Bijli" song in "Gangs of Wasseypur," Sinha has demonstrated her versatile vocal talent. Her dedication to her craft earned her prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award.

The singer's legacy extends beyond her music; she is a Padma Bhushan recipient, honoring her exceptional service in the field of arts. Sinha's songs, particularly those celebrating the Chhath festival, have become anthems, echoing in homes and celebrations, symbolizing her deep connection with her roots.
