Research Must Extend Beyond Academic Success to Enhance Lives, Urges UP Governor Anandiben Patel

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel emphasised the need for research to extend beyond academic achievements and positively impact every individual. Speaking at a two-day consultation on Ease of Doing Research and Development hosted by NITI Aayog, she highlighted that research and development are crucial for a nation's progress. She urged for long-term strategies to make India self-reliant and competitive globally.

UP Governor Calls for Meaningful Research

Patel stressed that challenges in the R&D sector should be viewed as opportunities for growth. Researchers were encouraged to compile a list of challenges and collaborate with senior officials to address them through systemic reforms. She highlighted the importance of autonomous, outcome-focused research institutions in strengthening India's higher education and transforming it into an innovation hub.

Focus on Grassroots Issues

The governor urged researchers to ensure their work benefits society, particularly by addressing grassroots issues. "Research must go beyond academic success and improve the lives of the last person in society. That is the true measure of meaningful research," she stated. Transparency, regular reviews, and departmental collaboration were underscored as vital to avoid decision-making delays.

An official statement from Raj Bhavan noted Patel's emphasis on quick file movement and grassroots-level problem-solving by officers. She also outlined Raj Bhavan's social outreach efforts in Uttar Pradesh, such as rehabilitating children involved in begging, HPV vaccinations for girls, and enhancing over 35,000 Anganwadi centres.

Community Engagement Initiatives

State universities have adopted villages to support the TB-free India campaign, leading to nearly four lakh TB patient recoveries across Uttar Pradesh. The governor highlighted initiatives focusing on maternal and child health, including hemoglobin testing for girls and promoting prenatal care. Anganwadi workers are being trained in child psychology and yoga.

Patel encouraged developing a collective mobile app for state universities to showcase and monitor projects. She suggested reviving student-led cycle rallies to raise awareness and expose youth to institutional and rural functioning. The governor praised universities' efforts resulting in high NAAC rankings and increased focus on social engagement, women's empowerment, and community development.

Promoting National Service

Patel emphasised the importance of identifying and nurturing talent hidden in villages. She stated that universities should strive not only for personal excellence but also for national service. The governor's remarks highlighted the need for research institutions to be transparent, efficient, and socially responsible.

The governor's address concluded with a call for actionable steps to enhance India's R&D ecosystem. By fostering collaboration across departments and focusing on societal benefits, Patel believes India can become a global leader in innovation.
