Indian Coast Guard Official Advocates for ALH Design Re-evaluation Following Recent Helicopter Crash
A senior official from the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has urged a review of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) design. This follows a crash involving one of these helicopters in Gujarat earlier this month. Inspector General and Regional Commander West, Bhisham Sharma, highlighted the need for reassessment despite the ALH's 20-year service history.

Sharma noted that the Coast Guard operates the Mark III version of the indigenous Dhruv helicopters. He mentioned his own experiences flying these helicopters, describing them as remarkable machines. However, he acknowledged that recent incidents necessitate design re-evaluations. "It is a wonderful machine but few incidents certainly call for some design re-evaluations," he stated during a press briefing in Mumbai.
ALH Fleet Grounded After Crash
The tragic incident on January 5 at Porbandar airport resulted in the deaths of two pilots and an aircrew diver. The helicopter crashed and caught fire, prompting the grounding of all twin-engine choppers in the fleet. Consequently, the ALH was absent from this year's Republic Day flypast due to safety concerns.
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, responsible for manufacturing the ALH, is currently addressing these issues. The grounding affects approximately 330 ALHs operated by the Army, Indian Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard. This decision underscores the seriousness of ensuring safety across all military operations involving these helicopters.
Enhancing Surveillance with Drones
In addition to addressing helicopter safety, Sharma revealed that the Coast Guard has acquired drones to boost surveillance capabilities around ships. These unmanned aerial vehicles are already being used by frontline ICG ships. The Coast Guard plans to introduce more drones soon, depending on their effectiveness.
The integration of drones into surveillance operations reflects a strategic move to enhance maritime security. As technology evolves, such advancements are crucial for maintaining vigilance and operational efficiency in safeguarding India's maritime interests.
The ongoing efforts to improve both helicopter safety and surveillance capabilities highlight the ICG's commitment to operational excellence. By addressing current challenges and embracing new technologies, they aim to ensure robust maritime security for India.
