Ray Of Hope: Qatar Court Accepts India's Plea Against Death Penalty To 8 Ex-Navy Personnel

A Qatari court has accepted Indian government's appeal concerning the death penalty verdict given to eight former Indian navy personnel last month. The court is currently reviewing the appeal, with sources indicating an imminent next hearing, as reported by India Today.

In October, a Qatari court handed down death sentences to eight ex-Indian Navy members who had been detained in the country for over a year.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on Thursday, "The judgment remains confidential. The initial court's verdict was shared with our legal team. Pursuing all available legal options, an appeal has been submitted. We are maintaining contact with Qatari authorities."

Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted India's ongoing engagement with Qatari authorities regarding this issue. The government intends to offer continuous legal and consular support to the affected Indian nationals.

In August 2022, Qatar detained these eight former Indian Navy officers on suspicions of espionage for Israel while they were employed by a Qatari company. The individuals-Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh-were apprehended by Qatar's intelligence agency in Doha on August 30, 2022.

Despite multiple attempts, the bail pleas of these Navy veterans were repeatedly denied by Qatari authorities. The Court of First Instance in Qatar declared the death penalty in October.
