Known for his philanthropic endeavours, Tata received numerous accolades throughout his life, including the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, which are among India's highest civilian honours. Under his leadership, the Tata Group transformed into an international conglomerate, with revenue growth soaring from $5.7 billion to nearly $100 billion during his tenure as chairman from 1991 to 2012.

1937: Ratan Tata is born to Soonoo and Naval Tata in Bombay.
1955: He departs for Cornell University to study architecture and engineering, completing his education in seven years.
1962: Tata joins the Tata Group, initially working with Tata Industries and later at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (now Tata Motors).
1963: He becomes part of the Tata Iron and Steel Company (Tisco).
1965: Tisco appoints him as a technical officer in its engineering division.
1970: He joins Tata Consultancy Services after returning from a brief stint in Australia.
1974: Tata is appointed Director on the board of Tata Sons.
1981: He takes the helm as Chairman of Tata Industries, transforming it into a high-technology promoter.
1983: Tata develops the strategic plan for the Tata Group.
1986: He is appointed Chairman of the national carrier, Air India.
1991: Tata succeeds J.R.D. Tata as Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts.
