Background of the Incident
The incident occurred in the Milak area of Rampur on Tuesday, February 28, when two groups clashed over the installation of a hoarding with Ambedkar's picture. One faction wanted to install the hoarding and erect a statue of Ambedkar on the land, while the other group opposed the move, claiming the land belonged to the gram samaj.
Escalation of the Conflict
As tensions escalated, local Tehsil workers and a police team arrived at the scene to remove the illegal encroachment. Amidst the chaos, a 17-year-old boy named Sumesh Kumar, who was returning home after his Class 10 examination, was tragically shot during the clash, resulting in his untimely demise. Two others were also injured in the incident.
Official Action Taken
In response to the incident, Rampur District Magistrate Joginder Singh promptly removed Milak Tehsil Deputy District Magistrate Aman Deval from his position. Additionally, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi took action by removing the concerned Circle Officer Kirti Nidhi Anand, Milak Police Station in-charge Inspector Anupam Sharma, and Outpost In-charge Inspector Surendra.
Bhim Army Chief's Visit and Demands
Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad visited the village on Wednesday, March 1, to meet the bereaved family of the deceased boy. Expressing his outrage over the incident, Azad vehemently criticized the ruling BJP government and demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the victim's family. He also called for a job to be provided to a family member.
