Raksha Bandhan 2025: 8 or 9 August – When Should Rakhi Be Tied This Year?
As Raksha Bandhan 2025 approaches, many people across India are wondering: Should Rakhi be tied on August 8 or August 9? The confusion stems from the timing of the full moon day (Purnima), which is when this sacred sibling festival is traditionally celebrated.
According to the Hindu Panchang, Raksha Bandhan in 2025 falls on Purnima Tithi of the Shravan or Sawan month, which spans across August 8 (Friday) and August 9 (Saturday). But the most auspicious time to tie the Rakhi depends on the muhurat, or the astrologically favorable period.
On this day, sisters tie rakhi on their brothers' wrists, wishing them prosperity. In return, brothers pledge to protect their sisters.

Raksha Bandhan 2025 Muhurat Timing:
Purnima Tithi begins: August 8, 2025 - 2:46 PM
Purnima Tithi ends: August 9, 2025 - 1:03 PM
Best time to tie Rakhi (Raksha Bandhan Muhurat):
Morning of August 9, 2025, before Bhadra Kaal ends
The auspicious time for tying rakhi begins at 6:17 AM and ends at 1:24 PM on 9th August. This year, Bhadra will end before sunrise, so there won't be any inauspicious shadow over the festival.
Astrologers suggest that August 9, Saturday morning, is the most suitable time to perform the Rakhi tying ceremony, as Bhadra-an inauspicious time-will not be in effect.
On Raksha Bandhan, offering water with roli and flowers to the Sun God using a copper vessel is recommended. This strengthens one's fortune. Additionally, worshipping your deity is advised. Many people first tie rakhi to their deity before others.
Worship Practices for Prosperity
Performing a formal worship of Goddess Lakshmi and offering kheer can ensure happiness and prosperity in life. Such rituals are believed to invite blessings and abundance.
Sisters should chant a specific mantra while tying rakhi on their brother's wrist to pray for his protection. This strengthens the sibling bond: "ऊँ येन बद्धो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः। तेन त्वामपि बध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल।।"
So, while both August 8 and 9 mark the Purnima, August 9, 2025, is the ideal day to celebrate Raksha Bandhan this year. If you're planning rituals, gifts, or travel, mark your calendar for Saturday morning, and get ready to celebrate this timeless bond of love and protection.
