A special court has sentenced former BJP MLA Bhawani Singh Rajawat and his aide Mahaveer Suman to three years in prison. They were found guilty of assaulting a forest officer in 2022. The SC/ST court also fined each of them Rs 20,000 under relevant sections of the IPC, including section 353, which pertains to deterring a public servant from performing duties.

Rajawat, the former MLA from Ladpura in Kota, expressed his intention to challenge the conviction in the high court. He mentioned that he was acquitted of charges under section 3 of the SC/ST Act. The case against Rajawat and Suman originated from a complaint by then Deputy Conservator of Forests, Ravi Kumar Meena.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred on March 31, 2022, when Rajawat and his supporters allegedly entered the DCF's office. They were protesting against the stoppage of temple repair work. During this confrontation, Rajawat reportedly slapped Meena. A video clip capturing Rajawat slapping Meena with his left hand went viral at the time.
Following the incident, police arrested both Rajawat and Suman. Rajawat spent ten days in judicial custody before securing bail from the Rajasthan High Court. The charges filed included sections 332, 353, and 34 of the IPC, along with section 32 of the SC/ST Act.
Legal Proceedings and Reactions
The court's decision has drawn attention due to its implications for public officials and their interactions with political figures. The case highlights issues related to abuse of power and accountability among elected representatives. Rajawat's decision to appeal indicates ongoing legal battles ahead.
The public prosecutor confirmed that both individuals were held accountable for using criminal force against a public servant. This ruling serves as a reminder of the legal consequences faced by those who obstruct government officials in their duties.
This case underscores the importance of maintaining decorum and respect for public servants. It also reflects on how legal systems address misconduct by individuals in positions of authority.
