The IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and at least eight other coastal districts in Tamil Nadu over the next 24 hours on Monday. Chennai and other coastal areas in Tamil Nadu started getting rainfall since Monday.

The rains have been caused by the cyclonic circulation which is currently prevailing over the Southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lankan coast and the Tamil Nadu coast, Skymet Weather reported.

Within 24 hours on Monday, the Nungambakkam observatory recorded 20 mm rainfall in Chennai, added Skymet Weather. Papanasam in Tirunelveli district received 5 cm rainfall, while Mylaudy and Kuzhithirai areas in Kanyakumar districts received 5 cm and 4 cm rainfall respectively, PTI reported.

"Chennai is ready to face heavy rain. Storm water drains have been cleaned and some 300 chronic water stagnation points have been identified. We have readied 400 suction pumps to remove water during heavy rain," D Karthikeyan, Chennai Municipal Corporation Commissioner, was quoted as saying by NDTV.

On Monday evening, district administration in Chennai and Kancheepuram have declared holiday for all schools and colleges on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, like Monday, due to rains, the city witnessed heavy traffic jams on its busy thoroughfares.

Unfortunately, one person lost his life due to rains as the wall of his house collapsed in Thanjavur district on Monday. The 38-year-old man was killed in Thinnaiyoor near Orathanadu, according to the police.
