Starting Jan 2026, Train Passengers Can Reschedule Confirmed Tickets On IRCTC Website

Beginning January 2024, Indian railway passengers can change confirmed e-tickets' travel dates without fees. This initiative enhances flexibility and reduces cancellation-related costs, offering greater convenience for travellers.

Starting January next year, passengers with confirmed e-tickets will be able to change their travel dates without incurring any financial loss or the hassle of cancelling and rebooking on the official Indian Railways (IRCTC) website.

Yes, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has instructed officials to establish this system by the end of the year, according to a report in NDTV. Currently, this option is only available for tickets purchased at railway counters.

"This system is unfair and not in the interest of passengers," the Union Minister told the English news channel.

However, travellers should note that securing a confirmed ticket for a new date will depend on seat availability. If the fare for the new date is higher, passengers must pay the difference. As per current regulations, cancelling a confirmed ticket 48 to 12 hours before departure results in a 25% fare deduction.

Flexibility and Savings for Passengers

This facility aims to save time and money for passengers by eliminating the need to cancel and rebook tickets. Presently, changing travel dates requires cancelling an existing ticket and purchasing a new one, which incurs additional costs due to cancellation fees and new ticket charges.

The proposed system is expected to offer greater flexibility, especially for those who need to alter their plans unexpectedly. An official mentioned that operational details are still being worked out, such as whether this option will apply to both online and counter bookings and how many date changes will be allowed.

Current Cancellation Policies

Under existing rules, if a confirmed ticket is cancelled between 48 and 12 hours before departure, 25% of the fare is deducted. This fee increases if cancellations occur between 12 and four hours before the train's departure. Once the reservation chart is prepared, no refunds are provided for cancellations.

The introduction of this system could significantly benefit travellers by reducing both time spent on booking processes and financial burdens associated with cancellations. It represents a step towards enhancing passenger convenience within India's railway network.
