Railway Ministry Reorganises Firozpur Division to Establish New Jammu Division with Modern Infrastructure
The Railway Ministry plans to establish a new division headquartered in Jammu, restructuring the Firozpur division under the Northern Railway Zone. This initiative was communicated to the Northern Railway on 1 January 2025. The proposed Jammu division will encompass five sections: Pathankot-Jammu-Udhampur, Srinagar-Baramula, Bhogpur Sirwal-Pathankot, Batala excluding-Pathankot, and Pathankot-Joginder Nagar.

The total length of these sections will be 742.1 km. The ministry stated that the final jurisdiction will be decided based on a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The Jammu divisional headquarters is expected to be a modern office, fully leveraging information technology. The ministry emphasised the importance of a streamlined organisational setup for the Jammu Division.
Infrastructure and Staffing Plans
All necessary positions for the new division will be sourced from existing posts within the Northern Railway. The ministry has requested a Detailed Project Report to evaluate infrastructure needs and organisational structure for the division's establishment. This report will also outline staff transfer modalities to the new division.
Railway officials noted that there are currently 68 rail divisions across 17 railway zones. With the addition of Jammu, it will become the 69th division. This expansion aims to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery in the region.
The ministry's circular highlighted that setting up the Jammu Division requires careful planning and resource allocation. It is crucial to ensure that all logistical aspects are addressed efficiently to facilitate smooth operations once the division is operational.
This development signifies a strategic move by the Railway Ministry to improve connectivity and management within the Northern Railway Zone. By reorganising existing resources, they aim to optimise performance without incurring additional costs.
