Railway Ministry Instructs All Zones to Maintain Engine Air Conditioning Systems for Summer Safety

The Railway Ministry has instructed its 17 zones to conduct a month-long initiative to ensure train engine air conditioning systems are fully operational for the summer. This effort aims to enhance the working conditions of running staff, which is crucial for safe train operations. The ministry emphasised that functional Cab ACs are vital during the hot season.

Railway Ministry Ensures Engine AC Functionality

In a letter dated May 6, the ministry highlighted that loco pilots and assistant loco pilots are documenting Cab AC issues in the Crew Management System or log book. These reports are also communicated to the Traction Loco Controller for inclusion in the System for Locomotive Asset Management. The zones have been urged to address any AC defects promptly and develop an action plan for quick repairs.

Focus on Locomotive Air Conditioning

The ministry advised officers and supervisors to travel in WAG 9 locomotives to assess Cab AC effectiveness firsthand. It also instructed zonal railways to include all electric and diesel locomotives with Cab AC in this initiative and submit a compliance report within a month. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure no locomotive leaves sheds with faulty air conditioning.

The All India Loco Running Staff Association welcomed this directive, having previously held a day-long protest on April 30 demanding AC in all locomotives. KC James, the association's secretary general, expressed appreciation for the ministry's timely action through a letter dated May 6, 2025.

Support from Loco Running Staff

"Your timely initiative in directing General Managers Electrical through your letter dated 06.05.2025 to improve the locomotive cabs is highly appreciated by the loco running staff," stated KC James in his letter to the ministry. He also expressed hope that AC would soon be installed in all locomotive cabins to lower crew stress levels and enhance railway efficiency and safety.

The ministry's directive underscores its commitment to improving working conditions for railway staff, ensuring safety and efficiency across its network. By addressing air conditioning issues, it aims to provide a more comfortable environment for those operating trains during the summer months.
