Rahul Gandhi's Third Manipur Visit: A Timed Move To Counter 'PM Modi's Absence'?

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited flood-affected areas in Assam's Cachar district on Monday before heading to neighboring Manipur. In Manipur, he visited a relief camp in Jiribam, interacting with people displaced by year-long ethnic violence. This marked Gandhi's first visit to the Northeast since becoming the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Gandhi's journey to Manipur took him through the flood-affected camps in Cachar, where he spent time understanding the plight of those affected. Upon reaching Jiribam, he engaged with residents of a relief camp set up in a school, seeking to learn about their conditions and challenges.

Rahul Gandhi s Third Manipur Visit A Timed Move To Counter PM Modi s Absence

Gandhi's visit sparked a war of words between Congress and BJP. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for planning a visit to Russia while neglecting a visit to Manipur since the onset of ethnic violence.

Ramesh tweeted, "Today, the non-biological PM goes to Moscow while the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha heads for Assam and Manipur. The PM has not visited Manipur or met with the state's Chief Minister and other political leaders since the crisis erupted on May 3, 2023."

He highlighted that this was Gandhi's third visit to Manipur since the crisis began fourteen months ago, contrasting it with PM Modi's lack of presence in the troubled state.

BJP Calls It Sick Tragedy Tourism

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya responded by accusing Rahul Gandhi of engaging in "sick tragedy tourism" and argued that the Congress was responsible for the ethnic conflict in Manipur. He tweeted, "The ethnic conflict in Manipur is a legacy of the Congress party. The state has witnessed the killing of civilians, police, and Army personnel for decades while Congress was in power."

Malviya further questioned whether any Congress leader, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had visited the strife-torn region. He dismissed Gandhi's efforts as "Balak Buddhi" (a grown man with a child's mind) indulging in tragedy tourism.

    Rahul Gandhi as People's Leader

Rahul Gandhi's visits to Assam and Manipur demonstrate Congress's strategy to showcase empathy and direct engagement with affected populations. By highlighting the leadership vacuum left by the ruling party, Gandhi's actions aim to position Congress as a responsive and caring alternative.

    Boosting Regional Support

Gandhi's engagement with local issues could bolster Congress's support in the Northeast, a region where the party has faced challenges in recent years. His visits signal a commitment to addressing the grievances of people affected by natural disasters and ethnic violence, potentially enhancing Congress's appeal in these states.

Rahul Gandhi's direct engagement with affected communities in Assam and Manipur may be a crucial factor in reviving Congress's fortunes in the Northeast. The visits allow Gandhi to highlight Congress's commitment to addressing urgent issues and contrast it with the perceived indifference of the ruling party.
