Political Criticism and Accusations

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya criticised Gandhi's gesture, calling it a "political necessity." He questioned Gandhi's connection to Bihar and its festivals, suggesting that his actions were insincere. Malviya tweeted about the importance of Chhath as a festival rich in faith and tradition.

The BJP used this incident to accuse Gandhi of being out of touch with Bihar's culture. Malviya further criticised Gandhi, saying, "You find the people of Bihar dirty, their bodies smelly — yet you shake hands out of compulsion. Their festivals don't excite you, but due to political necessity, you offer them congratulations."

Gandhi's Recent Controversies

Gandhi's recent four-nation tour to Latin America also drew attention. During an event at a Colombian university, he remarked that India's biggest threat was an "attack on democracy," which led to further criticism from the BJP.

Malviya suggested that if Gandhi couldn't understand Bihar's faith, he should return to Colombia and enjoy his vacation. This statement referred to Gandhi's recent international visit and added fuel to the ongoing political debate.

Bihar Elections Context

Bihar is gearing up for elections with polling scheduled in two phases on November 6 and November 11. The results will be announced on November 14. The RJD-Congress alliance aims to challenge the NDA, while Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj party adds intrigue to the contest.

Malviya concluded by asserting that Biharis would see through such tactics and would not support the RJD-Congress alliance or Mahagathbandhan any longer. This reflects BJP's confidence in retaining support despite opposition efforts.

Gandhi had tweeted heartfelt wishes for Chhath Puja: "Heartfelt greetings to everyone on the grand festival of Chhath Puja. May this sacred festival illuminate your life with happiness, prosperity, and good fortune." However, scrutiny over reused images overshadowed his message.

The four-day festival of Chhath is primarily celebrated in Bihar and parts of eastern India. It began on October 25 and will conclude on November 29 this year. The festival holds significant cultural importance for many communities across these regions.
