Rahul Gandhi Backs Wrestlers, Slams BJP Over Sexual Harassment Row
Rahul Gandhi visited wrestlers in Haryana, backing their demand for action against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in sexual harassment cases. He criticized the BJP for its handling of the situation and emphasized the need for dignity and respect for wrestlers.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed his support for the ongoing protest by Indian wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its former chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, over allegations of sexual harassment and mismanagement.

Gandhi's Interaction with Wrestlers
On Thursday, Gandhi shared a video of his recent interaction with wrestlers in Haryana's Jhajjar district, where the sportspersons reiterated their demand for action against Singh. In the video, Gandhi is seen trying his hand at wrestling and engaging in discussions with the wrestlers about their concerns.
Wrestlers' Demands and Protests
The wrestlers have been demanding the removal of Singh from his position as WFI chief and the formation of an ad-hoc committee to run the federation. They have also accused Singh of sexual harassment and financial irregularities.
Bajrang Punia's Protest
One of the prominent wrestlers leading the protest is Bajrang Punia, who recently announced his decision to return his Padma Shri award in protest against the election of Sanjay Singh, a loyalist of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as the new WFI president.
History of Complaints
Punia and coach Arya Virendra Dalal revealed that complaints against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh were raised as early as 2012 and 2014, but no action was taken at the time.
Sports Ministry's Intervention
In response to the wrestlers' protest, the Sports Ministry has suspended the newly-elected WFI panel for not adhering to its own constitution in decision-making. The ministry has also directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad-hoc committee to manage the affairs of the WFI.
Rahul Gandhi's support for the wrestlers' protest adds momentum to their cause and puts pressure on the authorities to address their concerns. The ongoing saga highlights the need for transparency, accountability, and the protection of athletes' rights in Indian sports.
