Jayalalithaa and Rahul Gandhi
Bangalore, Sept 28: Jayalalithaa might have escaped this jail term if Rahul Gandhi did not come up with his famous "nonsense" remark regarding an ordinance on corrupt politicians of the country.

Remember that dramatic press conference where Rahul Gandhi's sudden entry shocked and impressed the country. Despite facing criticism and opposition within the party, the Congress Vice President had denounced the controversial ordinance to negate the Supreme Court verdict on convicted lawmakers as "complete nonsense" and said what "our government has done is wrong".

Making a surprise brief appearance at a meet-the-press programme of his party's general secretary Ajay Maken at the Press Club in New Delhi, Rahul on Sept 27, 2013 said the ordinance should be "torn up and thrown away".

Jayalalithaa has been lodged in Bangalore central jail following her conviction

However, just one year after his dramatic press conference and his remark, Jayalalithaa has been sent to jail. A special court in Bangalore found Jayalalithaa guilty in a 18-year-old case. She has been convicted and imposed Rs 100 crore fine.

The AIADMK supremo was convicted in accumulating Rs 66 crore wealth disproportionate to known sources of her income from 1991-96 in Jayalalithaa's first term as Chief Minister.

After a medical check-up inside Bangalore central jail, the starlet-turned-politician was sent to to central jail Parappana Agrahara in the tech city.

Massive protest, which was begun just after announcement of the verdict, continued to shatter Tamil Nadu on Sunday, Sept 28. AIADMK supporters and workers gathered outside party headquarters in Chennai and continued to protest against the verdict.
