Rahul Gandhi’s Claims on Maharashtra Polls Ring Hollow: A Point-by-Point Fact Check
As the Modi government completes 11 years in power, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has sharpened his attack, alleging that the government has evaded accountability and focused solely on propaganda. More recently, Gandhi alleged electoral fraud in Maharashtra through a series of newspaper op-eds, raising doubts about the credibility of the Election Commission and the fairness of the electoral process.
However, a close fact-check of his claims reveals a narrative driven more by political frustration than evidence. Here's a point-by-point rebuttal of Rahul Gandhi's allegations:

1. Allegation: The Government Manipulated Election Commission Appointments
Rahul Gandhi's Claim:
He alleges that the Chief Justice of India was deliberately removed from the appointment panel of Election Commissioners, calling it a partisan move aimed at capturing the Commission.
The Facts:
Under the new law passed in 2023, the appointment panel includes the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition. The inclusion of the Opposition Leader ensures bipartisan representation. Replacing the Chief Justice with a Cabinet minister doesn't necessarily undermine transparency-in fact, it aligns with global norms where elected representatives appoint such commissions.
Furthermore, if political influence is the concern, historical records show that 25 out of 26 Election Commissioners before this were appointed during Congress-led governments. Would that imply elections during Congress rule were also rigged?
2. Allegation: Fraudulent Voter Surge in Maharashtra
Rahul Gandhi's Claim:
He claims 4.1 million new voters appeared 'suddenly' on the electoral rolls, suggesting manipulation and inclusion of fake names.
The Facts:
Of the 4.1 million new voters, about 2.6 million are newly eligible 18+ youth-an entirely natural increase. In fact, voter registration growth was higher in previous cycles:
2004-09: 10 million
2009-14: 7.5 million
2014-19: 6.3 million
Compared to these numbers, the 2024 growth is modest and reflects slowing population growth and more stringent verification, not manipulation.
3. Allegation: Suspicious Surge in Voter Turnout After 5 PM
Rahul Gandhi's Claim:
He alleges a 7.8% spike in voting after 5 PM, implying something fishy occurred during the closing hours.
The Facts:
Election Commission rules clearly allow all voters in line by 5 PM to cast their vote, even if it takes hours beyond. Final turnout figures are released after polling concludes, as per standard protocol. A post-5 PM spike is not irregular-it reflects orderly adherence to electoral procedure, not tampering.
4. Allegation: 12,000 Booths Manipulated in BJP's Favour
Rahul Gandhi's Claim:
He alleges vote rigging in 12,000 booths in favour of the BJP, citing the Kamthi constituency as an example.
The Facts:
In Kamthi, BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule won-just as he has in three prior elections, which undermines the idea of a sudden swing or manipulation. Increased women voter turnout (by 6%)-linked to schemes like Ladki Bahin Yojana-also played a decisive role.
Moreover, several high-turnout constituencies were won by the Opposition, such as:
Madha - NCP (SP)
Wani - Shiv Sena (UBT)
Shrirampur - Congress
These undermine the narrative that turnout increases uniformly benefited the BJP.
5. Allegation: ECI Withheld Voter Rolls and CCTV Footage
Rahul Gandhi's Claim:
He claims that the Election Commission refused to provide photo voter rolls and CCTV data to candidates, questioning its impartiality.
The Facts:
Candidates and their representatives are legally entitled to access voter rolls and polling records, including CCTV footage. However, due to privacy concerns, photo-attached voter rolls are not made public for general access. This policy was reaffirmed in December 2024 to ensure personal data protection, not to shield any malpractice.
The Bottom Line
Rahul Gandhi's allegations are not backed by verifiable data. The figures around voter registration, turnout and even booth-level outcomes reflect procedural normalcy. Accusing the Election Commission and entire electoral process without concrete proof not only erodes public trust but also sets a dangerous precedent. Losing an election is part of democratic life-undermining institutions to justify it is not.
It's not just institutions that are being questioned-it's the judgment of the voter that is being disrespected.
