Rahul Gandhi Rally in Northeast Delhi Highlights Residents' Water Supply Concerns Ahead of Elections

At a rally in Seelampur, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed a crowd expressing dissatisfaction with local civic conditions. Many attendees voiced concerns about unreliable water supply and a longing for the Congress's past governance. The rally took place in northeast Delhi, an area affected by communal violence in 2020 that resulted in over 50 deaths.

Residents Voice Water Concerns at Gandhi Rally

Gandhi's speech revisited the era when Sheila Dikshit led Delhi, contrasting it with current governance. He criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, claiming they neglect the needs of backward communities, Dalits, tribals, and minorities. Gandhi praised the achievements of Dikshit's three consecutive terms.

Water Supply Issues and Political Sentiments

Residents like Amaan Khan from Babarpur complained about having to buy water despite claims by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of providing clean water. Hazrat Ali and Mohammad Faizi, workers from Jafrabad's jacket market, echoed these concerns. Faizi mentioned that although electricity is free, water quality remains poor, forcing them to purchase it daily.

Faizi expressed disappointment with the AAP after giving them two chances and suggested that Congress should be given an opportunity this time. He also noted that Abdul Rehman, Congress's candidate from Seelampur, was let down by the AAP despite his active role in local development.

Women's Concerns and Political Promises

The rally saw significant participation from women who hoped for peace if neither BJP nor AAP came to power. Afia from Seelampur highlighted concerns about women's safety, referencing incidents in Manipur. She expressed a desire for a nation where women can live freely without fear.

Sadia, another resident, welcomed Congress's promise of Rs 2,500 for all women if elected. She believed this would empower women in Delhi and criticised AAP for failing to develop the area as promised. Sadia felt Congress could manage Delhi better despite lacking a leader like Sheila Dikshit.

A man wearing a kurta with the Congress flag carried a Tiranga and wore a garland of bottles filled with dirty water around his neck. This symbolic gesture highlighted the ongoing water issues faced by residents. Many people watched the rally from rooftops, waving Congress flags in support.

The rally underscored local grievances with current governance and nostalgia for past leadership under Sheila Dikshit. Gandhi's criticism of Modi and Kejriwal resonated with attendees who felt neglected by current policies. The event reflected hopes for change and better governance in Delhi.
