Rahul Gandhi for party president, CWC unanimously urges

The CWC told Rahul Gandhi that the job is for his taking. Sonia Gandhi who was unable to attend the meeting as she is unwell will be appraised about the decision.

The Congress Working Committee today unanimously urged Rahul Gandhi to take up the post of party president. Proposed by senior Congress leader A K Antony and backed by former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the group told Rahul Gandhi to urgently take up the party's top post.

The CWC told Rahul Gandhi that the job is for his taking. Sonia Gandhi who was unable to attend the meeting as she is unwell will be appraised about the decision. She would however take a final call on the issue. Sources in the Congress tell OneIndia Sonia Gandhi had wanted this shift to take place and hence she would give the green signal.

At first there was some division on whether Rahul Gandhi should be elevated to the top post. Some within the Congress feel that Sonia Gandhi should continue to lead the party until the forthcoming assembly elections are over. Some however felt that there would be clarity if Rahul is elevated immediately.
