Pushing MPs Isn't 'Mardangi': Kiren Rijiju Criticizes Rahul Gandhi Over Parliament Scuffle

In a recent escalation of political tensions, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his involvement in a physical altercation with BJP MPs during a protest outside Parliament.

The incident, which unfolded on the final day of the Winter Session, involved Gandhi, a black belt in Aikido, allegedly pushing two BJP MPs, leading to a heated confrontation between lawmakers from the NDA and INDIA blocs.

A Clash That Escalated Quickly

The scuffle occurred as MPs from both sides jostled to enter the House amid competing protests regarding the treatment of BR Ambedkar. The altercation resulted in two BJP MPs being injured and hospitalized, with the BJP accusing Gandhi of pushing them to gain entry into Parliament. Gandhi, on the other hand, claimed that BJP MPs had blocked his entry and physically threatened him. He later suggested that the BJP was attempting to divert attention from the ongoing Adani Group investigations by making false allegations.

Rijiju's Strong Criticism

Rijiju condemned the incident, noting that physical confrontations in Parliament were deeply regrettable. He pointed out that while heated exchanges and confrontations have been a part of Parliament since 1952, incidents that lead to physical harm and police action should never happen. In a pointed remark, Rijiju asked, “Have you learned karate, kung fu, to beat other MPs?” This comment was made in reference to Gandhi's martial arts background, suggesting that such skills should not translate into violence within Parliament.

A Tense Conclusion to the Winter Session

The scuffle overshadowed the last day of the Winter Session, forcing Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the Lok Sabha abruptly after just three minutes, with no customary summary of the session’s achievements. This sudden closure highlighted the deepening divide between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition, as well as the continued political friction that has marked recent Parliamentary sessions. The productivity of the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session plummeted to 58%, a significant dip compared to usual standards.

Parliament's Legislative Work Amid Political Tension

Despite the challenges, Parliament was able to conduct its legislative affairs. During the Winter Session, five bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha, with four successfully passing. The Rajya Sabha also passed three bills. Additionally, a special session was held on November 26 at the 'Samvidhan Sadan' to commemorate Constitution Day, underscoring the importance of Parliament’s legislative duties despite ongoing political turmoil.

Rising Tensions Between BJP and Congress

The scuffle is the latest in a series of confrontations that have intensified the rivalry between the BJP and Congress. This incident raises concerns about the conduct and decorum expected within the Parliament, with many questioning whether such physical altercations should have any place in the country's highest legislative body. Rijiju’s comments emphasized that physical confrontations are not a display of strength or masculinity but rather unfortunate events that detract from Parliament’s core function as a platform for debate and legislation.

As political tensions continue to rise, the Parliament faces increasing pressure to maintain its integrity and focus on its primary role in lawmaking, without being derailed by personal conflicts or partisan disputes.
