In a significant development ahead of the June 1 Lok Sabha elections, several politicians from Punjab, including notable names such as Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Charanjit Singh Channi, and Sukhjinder Randhawa, have officially entered the race by filing their nomination papers. The political landscape of Punjab is witnessing a flurry of activity as candidates from various parties make their intentions clear for the upcoming polls.

Punjab Leaders File Lok Sabha Nominations

Among the high-profile nominations, former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), filed his papers from Amritsar. His nomination was marked by a roadshow in Amritsar, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressing strong support for Sandhu's candidacy. "We have full confidence that the people of Amritsar will elect him and will send him to Delhi. He will be a very good MP in Parliament," Jaishankar stated.

On the same day, radical preacher Amritpal Singh's nomination was notably filed by a representative from the Khadoor Sahib seat as an Independent. Singh is currently detained in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act.

Party-wise Nominations

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), BJP, and other parties saw their candidates stepping forward to file nominations across various constituencies. Notably, AAP's Raj Kumar Chabbewal and Congress's Yamini Gomar filed from Hoshiarpur, while SAD's Mohinder Singh Kaypee and BJP's Sushil Rinku were among those who filed from Jalandhar.

In Ludhiana, BJP candidate and three-time MP Ravneet Singh Bittu submitted his nomination papers, highlighting the competitive spirit among candidates. Similarly, AAP candidate Gurmeet Singh Khuddian and Congress nominee Jeet Mohinder Sidhu made their candidacies official for the Bathinda seat.

Election Schedule

Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C. revealed that a total of 82 candidates filed their nomination papers on Friday alone. Since the commencement of the nomination process on May 7, a total of 143 candidates have stepped forward. The nomination filing period will continue until May 14, with scrutiny scheduled for May 15. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is set for May 17, ensuring all preparations are in place for the June 1 elections.

The election process observes a brief pause due to gazetted holidays on May 11 and 12, after which it will resume until the deadline. This period is crucial for candidates to solidify their positions and for parties to strategize their campaigns effectively.

The Lok Sabha elections in Punjab are shaping up to be a closely watched affair with seasoned politicians and new faces alike vying for a chance to represent their constituencies in Parliament. As candidates finalize their nominations and gear up for the electoral battle, the political dynamics in Punjab promise an engaging contest leading up to June 1.
