Punjab Medical Community Announces Strike to Protest Doctor Assault

In a significant move that underscores the growing concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals in Punjab, the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) has declared a statewide strike on April 22. This decision comes in the wake of a distressing incident where Dr. Sunil Bhagat, a Senior Medical Officer at the ESI Employees State Insurance Scheme Hospital in Hoshiarpur, was allegedly assaulted by a patient's attendant on Thursday. The assault has not only left Dr. Bhagat in a critical condition but has also sparked widespread indignation among the medical fraternity across the state.

Punjab Doctors Strike Against Assault

Dr. Akhil Sarin, President of PCMSA, expressed that the strike is a direct response to the attack, aiming to highlight the deep-seated resentment and concern within the medical community regarding their safety. The association's statement revealed that the strike would lead to a temporary suspension of several key medical services. This includes Outpatient Department (OPD) services, Elective Operation Theatres (OTs), and various medical examinations such as those required for arms licenses, driving licenses, and drug tests. Additionally, routine office work, meetings, video conferences, and VIP duties are set to be halted on Monday.

However, it's important to note that essential services such as emergency care, post-mortems, and medical examinations for prisoners will remain unaffected. The PCMSA aims to ensure that critical healthcare needs continue to be met without interruption during the strike period.

The association has taken a firm stand against violence targeting healthcare workers and is calling on the government to implement immediate measures to bolster security at all public health centres across Punjab. Dr. Sarin cautioned that if these concerns are not adequately addressed, it could lead to further escalated actions by the association in accordance with the model code of conduct.

This situation highlights an ongoing issue of violence against healthcare professionals in India, prompting calls for more stringent security measures and legal protections for medical staff. The upcoming strike by PCMSA serves as a critical reminder of the urgent need for action to ensure the safety and security of healthcare workers across the state.
