Punjab Lawyer Faces Arrest For Assaulting Elderly Mother: A Disturbing Sequence Of Events
The city of Ropar in Punjab has been left in shock following the arrest of a lawyer, Ankur Verma, on charges of assaulting his 73-year-old mother, Asha Rani. The incident, which has garnered widespread condemnation, was brought to light through a series of disturbing CCTV footages and a heart-wrenching account from the victim herself.
The chain of events was set in motion when Asha Rani, bearing the physical and emotional scars of the abuse, confided in her daughter, Deepshikha, about the torment she was undergoing at the hands of her own family. Deepshikha, alarmed by her mother's revelations, decided to delve deeper. She accessed the CCTV camera installed in Verma's residence, and the footage she uncovered was nothing short of horrifying. It clearly depicted Verma, along with his wife and minor son, engaging in acts of physical violence against Asha Rani.

Determined to seek justice for her mother, Deepshikha approached the NGO, Sakhi One Stop Centre, known for its work in women's protection in Punjab. Armed with the evidence, the NGO promptly handed over the footage to the local police, urging immediate action.
Upon reviewing the footage, the police swiftly intervened. Asha Rani was rescued from the house located in the Giani Zail Singh Nagar locality. A subsequent medical examination revealed several bruises on her body, further corroborating her account of the abuse.
The now-viral CCTV footage paints a grim picture. In one segment, Verma is seen slapping his mother multiple times, grabbing her mouth, and pulling her by the hair. Another clip shows his wife, Sudha, and their son joining in the assault, adding to the brutality of the act.
Acting on the evidence, the Ropar city police registered a case against Verma under Sections 327, 342, 323 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 24 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act. Verma's arrest followed shortly, and during his apprehension, he was seen pleading for forgiveness.
As per media reports, Dr. Baljit Kaur, Punjab's Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development, expressed her deep condemnation of the incident. She stated, "The act of beating up the mother by lawyer Ankur Verma, his wife, and son at Ropar, is highly condemnable." Dr. Kaur has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter and has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Ropar to take stringent legal action against the perpetrators.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the elderly in society. Dr. Kaur, addressing these concerns, announced plans to organize an awareness march in Ropar city. The aim of this march is to protest against such heinous acts and to encourage citizens to adopt a more respectful and caring attitude towards the elderly. She also said that such incidents strain social relations within our society.
In a society where the elderly are often revered and treated with utmost respect, incidents like these serve as a grim reminder of the changing dynamics of familial relationships. The prompt action by the police and the support from NGOs highlight the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring the safety and dignity of every individual.
As the city of Ropar grapples with this unsettling incident, it underscores the need for vigilance, awareness, and community support in ensuring the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable members of society.
For any assistance or information related to such incidents, citizens are encouraged to reach out to local NGOs and helplines that work towards the protection and welfare of women and the elderly.
