Punjab Government Suspends Two IAS Officers for Delay in Smartphone Procurement for Anganwadi Workers

The Punjab government has suspended two senior IAS officers due to a significant delay in procuring smartphones for Anganwadi workers. This action follows a court approach by the vendor involved in the procurement process.

In a significant administrative move, the Punjab government has suspended two senior IAS officers. Kamal Kishore Yadav and Jaspreet Singh faced suspension on Saturday. The official orders did not specify the reasons for this action. However, sources indicate it relates to a six-year delay in acquiring smartphones for Anganwadi workers under the Union Government's Mission Saksham Anganwadi.

The vendor chosen to supply these smartphones reportedly took legal action due to the delay. This situation has also led to the transfer of two more IAS officers. Among them is Vikas Pratap, who was the Additional Chief Secretary for Social Security. The suspension of Yadav and Singh falls under Rule 3 1 of the All India Services Discipline and Appeal Rules, 1969.

Impact on Administrative Roles

During their suspension, both officers are required to stay in Chandigarh. Kamal Kishore Yadav, a 2003-batch IAS officer, held the position of administrative secretary in the Department of Industries and Commerce, Investment Promotion, and Promotion of Information Technology. Jaspreet Singh, from the 2014 batch, served as managing director of the Punjab Information and Communication Technology Corporation Limited.

Gurkirat Kirpal Singh has been appointed to take over responsibilities for Industries, Investment Promotion, and Social Security. Singh had been without an assignment for 11 months prior to this appointment. This change comes amidst a backdrop of previous suspensions within the AAP regime.

Previous Suspensions Under AAP Regime

Earlier instances of IAS officer suspensions include Rajesh Tripathi in February 2025. Tripathi was suspended as Muktsar deputy commissioner due to serious corruption allegations. Additionally, in August 2023, senior IAS officers D K Tiwari and Gurpreet Singh Khaira were suspended over a technically flawed decision regarding panchayat dissolution.

The current suspensions highlight ongoing administrative challenges within Punjab's governance structure. The actions taken reflect efforts to address delays and ensure accountability among senior officials. As these developments unfold, they underscore the importance of timely decision-making and adherence to procedural norms within government operations.
