Punjab Doctors Demand Justice for Kolkata Medic Rape-Murder Case
The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) halted OPD services at public healthcare centres on Friday. This action was in protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. PCMSA president Dr. Akhil Sarin stated, "We are demanding expeditious justice for the victim, central protection act for healthcare professionals and adequate security arrangements at public healthcare facilities."

Statewide Protests and Service Suspensions
Medical professionals across Punjab held sit-ins at health centres to demand swift justice for the victim. OPD services were suspended at primary, community health centres, subdivision level facilities, and civil hospitals. Despite the protests, emergency and medico-legal services continued to operate on Friday.
Support from PGIMER Faculty Association
The Faculty Association of PGIMER, Chandigarh, announced its support for the Indian Medical Association's (IMA) strike call for Saturday. According to a statement from PGIMER, all OPD services would be closed for both old and new patients on Saturday. However, emergency and critical care services would remain operational.
Nationwide Strike by Indian Medical Association
The Indian Medical Association declared a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency services starting from 6 am on Saturday. This strike was in response to the alleged rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the subsequent vandalism at the facility.
The protests highlight the urgent need for better security measures for healthcare professionals. The medical community is united in seeking justice and improved safety protocols at public healthcare facilities.
