Pune Bus Fire: Police Investigate Possible Employer Negligence in Chemical Storage
A tragic incident occurred near Pune, where a mini-bus driver allegedly set a bus on fire using benzene, resulting in the deaths of four employees from Vyoma Graphics. The driver, Janardan Hambardekar, reportedly obtained the chemical from the company's storeroom. The police are now investigating potential negligence by the graphics company regarding how the driver accessed the flammable substance.

Hambardekar, who suffered minor burn injuries himself, is currently hospitalised. The police suspect that his actions were motivated by a personal vendetta against some staff members and dissatisfaction over a salary reduction. Senior Police Inspector Kanhaiya Thorat stated that they are examining whether the company had proper storage licenses for such chemicals and how the driver managed to access them.
Investigation into Chemical Access
The police are scrutinising the company's management for possible negligence. They aim to determine if there was any lapse in security that allowed Hambardekar to obtain around one litre of benzene. This investigation includes verifying if the company held a valid license to store such hazardous materials.
The first information report (FIR) describes Hambardekar as an eccentric individual known for frequent disputes with colleagues over trivial matters in recent months. On March 18, he allegedly stole benzene from the storeroom and expressed intentions to retaliate against his co-workers.
Company's Response and Support
Nitesh Shah, a company official, expressed shock over the incident and assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. "We are in shock. The investigation is underway and we are cooperating with the police. We are also providing medical support to all the injured persons. They are all like our family members and we are taking care of them," Shah said.
The FIR further reveals that Hambardekar used cloth pieces soaked in benzene to ignite the fire. This act of sabotage resulted in severe consequences, with more than six individuals sustaining burn injuries alongside those who lost their lives.
The police continue their probe into this tragic event, focusing on both the driver's motives and any potential lapses in safety protocols at Vyoma Graphics. As investigations proceed, authorities aim to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
