Protein Supplement Probe: FSSAI Takes Action Against Health Risks And Misleading Claims
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is currently taking stringent actions against protein supplement powders and shakes that are not medically certified or that display misleading claims.
This crackdown follows a comprehensive study conducted by the FSSAI, revealing widespread issues with false advertising and safety concerns associated with these products, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Protein Supplement Probe: FSSAI Takes Action Against Health Risks
The Economic Times reported on these developments, citing sources within the FSSAI. The primary reason behind FSSAI's crackdown is the prevalence of misleading claims associated with protein powders and supplements sold across various platforms including retail stores, e-commerce websites like Healthkart and Amazon, and gyms.
Many of these products are marketed with claims that do not meet regulatory standards, potentially misleading consumers about their efficacy and safety. The regulatory scrutiny could potentially lead to bans on products that fail to meet the safety and quality norms set by the FSSAI, as reported by Hindustan Times.
This includes products that do not provide accurate information about their protein content or that contain harmful substances such as fungal aflatoxins and pesticide residues. According to a study published in the journal Medicine, which analyzed 36 popular protein supplements in India, nearly 70% of these products were found to have incorrect protein content claims.
Some brands were found to provide only half of the protein content they claimed, while others contained harmful contaminants. The study also highlighted concerns about the quality of Indian-made herbal protein supplements, noting that many of them include botanicals that could be harmful to liver health, as per media reports.
The authors of the study, clinical researchers from Rajagiri Hospital in Kerala and a US-based technology entrepreneur, emphasized the need for stricter scrutiny, regulation, and safety studies before these products are marketed to consumers. Overall, the FSSAI's actions underscore the growing importance of ensuring transparency, accuracy, and safety in the protein supplement industry in India.
As consumer awareness and demand for fitness products continue to rise, regulatory agencies like the FSSAI play a crucial role in safeguarding public health by enforcing stringent standards and holding manufacturers accountable for the claims they make about their products.
