Prof Kalburgi murder case: Karnataka government to request CBI investigation, CID to probe for now

Bengaluru, Aug 31: The Karnataka government will write to the Central Bureau of Investigation requesting it to take over the probe into the murder of Kannada scholar, Professor M M Kalaburgi.

The Karnataka Cabinet which held a meeting today however also decided that until the CBI gives its opinion on whether it could take over the case or not, the CID will probe into the matter.

Earlier during the day, Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah announced that the probe into the death of the noted Kannada scholar would be handed over to the CID.

During the cabinet meeting that was held just a while ago, there was a debate on whether the matter should be handed over to the CBI or not.

Several ministers felt that it would be better if the CBI probes the case considering the sensitivites involved in the matter.

It was decided that the Karnataka government would now officially request the CBI to take over the investigation into the case.

The CBI on its part would consult with the Union Home Ministry before taking a final call on the request made by the Karnataka government.

The cabinet however decided that the probe should not suffer in the wake of the formalities being completed which is expected to take some time.

The CBI will independently verify before it decides on whether it is a fit case to be probed or not.

The Cabinet has decided that until such time, the CID would probe into the matter as was decided earlier during the day by the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
