Operation Bluestar was the Army operation which was carried out in June 1984 to flush out the militants from the Golden Temple.

On the orders of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Indian Army stormed into the Golden Temple to contain Sikh militancy under the leadership of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in Punjab. It was informed that Bhindranwale had stashed large quantities of arms in the Golden Temple premises.

However, security has been beefed up at the Golden Temple. DCP (Law and order) Parminder Singh Bhandal has said that the city has been sealed to prevent any untoward incident and adequate police personnel has been posted at various spots in the city.

Even last year, pro-Khalistan slogans were raised by supporters of radical Sikh outfits as well as that of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) at the Golden Temple. Many youths held banners and placards with 'Khalistan Zindabad' written on them. They wore t-shirts with the picture of slain separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale printed on them.

Pro-Khalistan slogans were also raised by activists of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) outfit led by former MP Simranjit Singh Mann, who was also present at the spot. He raised the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala and demanded justice for the family.
