Dharavi Redevelopment Termed 'Scam' by Prithviraj Chavan; White Paper Sought

Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has alleged that the Dharavi slum redevelopment project in Mumbai is a significant scam. He has called for a white paper from the Maharashtra government to address these concerns. Chavan made these remarks while discussing the budgetary demands of the revenue department in the Maharashtra assembly.

Dharavi Project Called Scam

The Congress and Shiv Sena UBT, both part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, have been vocal critics of the multi-billion dollar Dharavi redevelopment project, which is being executed by the Adani group. Chavan stated, "The Dharavi redevelopment project is a big scam and the state government should come out with a white paper, or else when the next government comes to power in October the entire project will be scrapped."

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Under Scrutiny

Dharavi is Mumbai's largest slum cluster. The redevelopment project involves no land transfer to the Adani group but to Maharashtra government departments. The Ahmedabad-based conglomerate will build houses that will be handed over to these departments for allotment to residents of Asia's biggest slums, according to sources close to the project.

Chavan questioned whether the recent allocation of dairy land in Kurla for the Dharavi redevelopment was included in the original tender. He said, "There is no mention which government land is being given for Dharavi redevelopment...whether it is Deonar, Mulund, salt pan land." He demanded an investigation into how much revenue loss this could cause for the government.

Opposition Demands Transparency

The former state chief minister also claimed that government land was being sold to industrialists at very low prices, resulting in a significant revenue loss for the state. He insisted that all revenue entitled to the government had been waived in this process.

Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil later assured that a white paper would be issued on the Dharavi project. He confirmed that this document would include details of the tender process. This assurance came after persistent demands from opposition leaders for greater transparency regarding the project's execution.

The opposition's stance on this issue highlights their broader concerns about governance and accountability in large-scale development projects. They argue that without proper oversight, such initiatives could lead to substantial financial losses and misuse of public resources.

The upcoming state assembly elections in October are expected to bring further scrutiny to this project. Opposition parties have indicated that they will continue to push for transparency and accountability if they come into power.

The debate over the Dharavi redevelopment project underscores ongoing tensions between different political factions in Maharashtra. It also raises questions about how large-scale urban development projects should be managed and overseen to ensure they benefit all stakeholders involved.

This situation remains dynamic as political leaders and stakeholders await further developments and disclosures regarding the project's details and its potential impact on Mumbai's urban landscape.
