PM Modi Praises Assam's Ambitious Planting Initiative, Hails Environmental Benefits

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praises the Assam government's mega plantation drive as a booster for India's mission for clean and green growth. He emphasizes on its long-term benefits including environmental protection and improved public health.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently commended the Assam government's extensive tree plantation initiative, asserting that it will significantly contribute to India's pursuit of clean and green growth. This step is not only crucial for environmental protection but also enhances public health by improving air quality. Furthermore, the initiative promises to augment the green cover of Assam, a state renowned for its picturesque landscapes.

Assam Plantation Drive

In his letter addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma concerning the state's 'Amrit Brikshya Andolan', Prime Minister Modi expressed his admiration for the ambitious plan of planting one crore saplings across Assam. The letter was later shared by Sarma on X (previously known as Twitter). In his missive, PM Modi emphasized several references in Indian culture and literature that underscored the significance of trees and forests.

He quoted Sanskrit verses illustrating how trees purify air and aid in warding off diseases. He further contended that harmonizing prakriti (nature) with pragati (development) is an essential characteristic of New India's development model.

New India’s Development Model

"While we have been the fastest-growing economy, we have also been perhaps the only major nation to meet committed climate targets," stated PM Modi. His statement highlights a delicate balance between economic progress and ecological preservation that India strives to maintain amidst rapid industrialization and urban expansion.

National Mission for Clean and Green Growth

According to PM Modi, initiatives such as this plantation drive are instrumental in bolstering our national mission towards clean and green growth. It will not only result in short-term benefits like increased oxygen production but also lead to long-term spin-offs including improved soil quality, biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration among others.

In conclusion, the Assam government's mega plantation drive is a commendable initiative that aligns with India's broader goals of sustainable development and climate change mitigation. It reflects the country's commitment to protect and enhance its natural resources while simultaneously pursuing economic growth. This balance between 'prakriti' and 'pragati', as PM Modi pointed out, is indeed the hallmark of New India’s development model. Such initiatives set an example for other states to follow suit in integrating environmental considerations into their respective development strategies.
