Press Conference Drama: Man Grills EC Over Lok Sabha Election Nomination Process

During the Election Commission of India's (ECI) press conference to announce the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, an unexpected interruption occurred when a man not affiliated with the press began questioning the Commission's procedures.

Press Conference Drama Man Grills EC Over Lok Sabha Election Nomination Process

Identified as Professor DS Agarwal, he introduced himself as a nominee of ex-President Pranab Mukherjee in 2012. Agarwal raised concerns about the nomination process, suggesting that voters should be proposers instead of MPs. He also criticised the authority granted to District Magistrates, who serve as Returning Officers, to cancel or approve candidates' nominations, calling for amendments to prevent biased individuals from participating.

The ECI swiftly removed Agarwal from the press conference, but has not yet commented on the incident.

Despite the disruption, the ECI proceeded with its announcement, revealing that the Lok Sabha elections for the 543 constituencies will be conducted in seven phases, commencing on April 19 and concluding on June 1, with vote counting scheduled for June 4.

The polling dates for the respective phases are as follows: April 19 (phase 1), April 26 (phase 2), May 7 (phase 3), May 13 (phase 4), May 20 (phase 5), May 25 (phase 6), and June 1 (phase 7).
