President Murmu Appoints Justice BR Gavai As Next Chief Justice Of India

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday approved Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai aka BR Gavai's name to be next Chief Justice of India (CJI). Justice BR Gavai take CJI's oath on May 14, 2025. This announcement was shared by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X, a social media platform. Meghwal's post detailed that, under the powers granted by the Constitution of India, Justice Gavai has been selected to lead the Supreme Court of India starting from mid-May 2025.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025," stated Meghwal in his social media update on April 29, 2025. This appointment marks the beginning of Justice Gavai's tenure as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, succeeding CJI Sanjiv Khanna.

Justice Gavai will helm the judiciary's highest office in India for approximately six months until his retirement on November 23, 2025. His short tenure as the Chief Justice of India will be significant, considering his extensive legal background and the impactful decisions he has been a part of during his time at the Supreme Court.

Justice BR Gavai's legal career is marked by a distinguished journey that began in Amravati, where he was born on November 24, 1960. He took up the mantle of law by joining the bar on March 16, 1985. Initially, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court for three years starting from 1987. Subsequently, he focused his practice mainly at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court after 1990. Here, he served in various capacities including Standing Counsel for several municipal corporations and universities.

On May 24, 2019, Justice Gavai's legal acumen led to his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Prior to this, he had been appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court on November 14, 2003, and was made a permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 12, 2005.
