New Delhi, Oct 9: President Pranab Mukherjee felicitated Classical Tamil scholars with the 'Presidential Awards for Classical Tamil' for the year 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He also conferred young writers who have done excellent job in the field.
Award List
Tolkappiyar Award: The lifetime achievement award in classical Tamil was given to Dr Iravatham Mahadevan for the year 2009-2010 and Prof Tamizhannal Periakarrupan for 2010-2011.
Kural Pitam Award: This was awarded to Dr Jaroslav Vacek for 2009-2010 and Dr John Ralston Marr for 2010-2011.
While the above-mentioned awardees were presented with a shawl and cash prize of Rs 5 Lakhs, the young scholars were awarded Rs 1 lakh each. The latter were felicitated on the basis of their exceptional contribution in literature through teaching, publication, and research in Classical Tamil.
Among the young awardees were Dr. S. Kalpana, Dr. T. Suresh, Dr. R. Chandrasekaran, Dr. Vaani Arivaalan, Dr. C. Muthamizhselvan for 2009-10, while for 2010-11 Dr. T. Sangayya, Dr. A. Mani, Dr. A. Jayakumar, Dr. S. Chidambaram and Dr. K. Sundarapandian received the awards.
The awards had been given by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
