Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan emphasises the need to incorporate lessons from Post Operation Sindoor into the theatreisation model, enhancing operational preparedness and capabilities across the Indian military.

Gen Chauhan emphasised that for the military, this new normal should translate into improved operational readiness around the clock. He stressed the necessity of being better prepared in areas such as air defence, counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and electronic warfare. "We should have our ISR intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and kinetic operation capabilities across the length and breadth of Pakistan, that would be I think, new normal," he stated.

Technological Advancements and Strategic Changes

He also pointed out that technological superiority over adversaries is crucial. The focus may shift from targeting static targets to engaging mobile ones in future operations. Gen Chauhan did not provide further details on this aspect. He mentioned that while changes are being implemented, adversaries might also adapt to this new normal.

Discussing the role of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen Chauhan noted that the position does not come with an operational mandate. He reflected on the significance of hosting the Combined Commanders Conference in eastern India for the first time, suggesting it was a strategic message. The conference took place in Kolkata from September 15-17.

Theaterisation Model and Lessons Learned

Regarding theaterisation plans, Gen Chauhan stated that experiences from various operations like Uri, Balakot, Galwan, Doklam, and Covid need to be integrated into a comprehensive organisational structure. This structure should be adaptable to all situations. The theaterisation plan involves creating theatre commands comprising units from the Army, Navy, and Air Force to address security challenges in specific regions.

Currently, each branch of the military operates its own commands separately. Gen Chauhan highlighted that post Operation Sindoor, one significant challenge has been coordinating schedules among top military leaders. "There is not one day when all four of us three Service chiefs and CDS are in Delhi," he remarked humorously.

The insights gained from past operations are crucial for developing a robust defense strategy. By incorporating these lessons into a unified command structure, the Indian armed forces aim to enhance their preparedness for future challenges. This approach ensures a cohesive response to security threats across different geographical areas.
