Uttar Pradesh Implements Safety Measures After 15 Poll Staff Succumb to Heat
With the mercury soaring in Uttar Pradesh, the state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has taken proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the intense heatwave on polling staff and voters. On a distressing note, at least 15 polling personnel succumbed to heat-related conditions this Friday, prompting immediate action from electoral authorities.

In Mirzapur district alone, 13 poll workers lost their lives due to high fever and blood pressure spikes amidst the sweltering temperatures. Additionally, 23 individuals were hospitalized for similar symptoms. Sonbhadra district reported two fatalities and nine cases of illness among election duty staff, suspected to be caused by heat stroke, as confirmed by a senior official.
Navdeep Rinwa, the Chief Electoral Officer, issued a statement highlighting the urgent need for protective measures against the heatwave. This announcement came in light of reports received on May 31 about polling personnel being adversely affected by the heat in several districts. Rinwa has directed district authorities to ensure that all polling stations are equipped with cold drinking water, adequate shade, fans, and seating arrangements tailored for the elderly, women, and disabled individuals.
As thirteen Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh prepare for elections this Saturday, Rinwa emphasized the importance of having sufficient quantities of Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and medical kits available for paramedics and ASHA workers at every polling center. Additionally, he advised deploying paramedic personnel alongside sector magistrates and ensuring that emergency ambulance services in the districts remain active for prompt assistance at polling centers and booths.
To further safeguard voters and polling staff from the adverse effects of the heatwave, Rinwa recommended wearing light cotton clothes, caps or umbrellas, and carrying white cotton towels or cloths to cover their heads. He also suggested keeping hydrated with water, lemonade, or ORS as needed. Efforts should be made to provide water to those waiting in lines through volunteers. Rinwa encouraged voters to arrive at polling stations early before temperatures escalate.
Rinwa also stressed the importance of voters carrying their voter slip, photo voter identity card, or any alternative photo identity card to expedite the voting process. Moreover, he advised that shops and general stores near polling stations selling bottled water should remain open to ensure accessibility for all.
This comprehensive approach by Uttar Pradesh's electoral authorities aims to ensure that the democratic process is not hindered by natural adversities such as heatwaves. By prioritizing the health and safety of both voters and polling personnel, they hope to facilitate a smooth and inclusive voting experience despite challenging weather conditions.
