Jaishankar Critiques 'Cherry-Picked' Facts on Tipu Sultan, Calls Erstwhile Mysore King 'Controversial' Figure
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently discussed the complexities surrounding Tipu Sultan's historical narrative. He noted that politics often involves selective fact-picking, which has significantly influenced perceptions of the former Mysore ruler.
Speaking at the launch of Vikram Sampath's book, 'Tipu Sultan: The Saga of Mysore Interregnum 1761-1799,' Jaishankar highlighted how narratives have been shaped over time.

Jaishankar emphasised that Tipu Sultan is a multifaceted figure in Indian history. While he is celebrated for resisting British colonialism, he also evokes negative sentiments in regions like Mysore, Coorg, and Malabar. The minister pointed out that national historical writings have largely focused on his resistance to British rule, often neglecting other aspects.
Historical Narratives and Political Influence
According to Jaishankar, recent political changes have allowed for alternative perspectives and more balanced historical accounts. He stressed the importance of open-minded scholarship and genuine debate in fostering a pluralistic society. The minister argued that history should not be tailored for political convenience.
Jaishankar described Sampath's book as more than just a biography. It offers insights into the politics, strategy, administration, sociology, and diplomacy of Tipu Sultan's era. The book challenges orthodox views and presents facts for readers to form their own judgments.
Tipu Sultan's Diplomatic Endeavours
The minister also touched on Tipu Sultan's foreign policy efforts. He noted that Tipu sought support from rulers in Turkey, Afghanistan, and Persia based on faith. Jaishankar suggested that the concept of nationhood was different then, making it challenging to apply contemporary constructs to past identities.
Jaishankar highlighted Tipu's interactions with French and Turkish emissaries as fascinating. These interactions reveal Tipu's expectations from foreign partners and his diplomatic mindset. He mentioned that Tipu was sometimes caught on the wrong side of global events, such as those in France.
Complexities of Tipu Sultan's Legacy
The minister acknowledged that Tipu Sultan's treatment of his people and neighbouring kingdoms remains a sensitive issue. He cited writings and actions that reflect Tipu's mindset and identity. Jaishankar praised Sampath for shedding light on these aspects through the book.
Jaishankar expressed gratitude for the insights provided in Sampath's work regarding Tipu Sultan's foreign policy. He noted that Indian studies often focus on post-Independence foreign policies, overlooking earlier international engagements by Indian kingdoms.
The minister remarked on Napoleon's correspondence with Tipu Sultan, which never reached him due to British interference. He observed that diplomacy played a significant role in Tipu's fate, as the British formed a coalition against him, leaving him isolated.
Jaishankar concluded by reflecting on the lessons from Tipu Sultan's story about understanding global developments accurately. He suggested that examining these historical narratives can offer valuable insights into India's past diplomatic efforts.
