Political Power Play: Maharashtra's Dussehra Rallies Pit Sena Against Sena Ahead Of Polls

Today is an important day in Maharashtra politics as the Mumbai city hosts the annual Dussehra rally, an event steeped in political tradition, especially ahead of assembly polls.

The rally, however, will see a division as the Shiv Sena party, split into factions led by Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray, conducts separate events. Thackeray's group will gather at Shivaji Park, a venue that has been synonymous with Sena's Dussehra celebrations since the late 1960s, initiated by the party's founder, Balsaheb Thackeray. On the other hand, Shinde's faction will convene at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai.

Both factions are poised to present their visions for Maharashtra, amidst a backdrop of recent political turmoil. The Thackeray Sena has crafted a narrative around preserving the state's pride and condemning those who defected to Shinde's camp, branding them as traitors.

In contrast, Shinde's teaser symbolically portrays his faction as liberators of the Sena, breaking free from the constraints represented by a tiger tied to the Congress. These contrasting messages underpin the deep rift within the party and set the stage for their respective rallies, which promise hours of speeches, festivities, and food stalls.

The political landscape in Maharashtra is brimming with anticipation not only due to the Sena split but also because of a similar division within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after Ajit Pawar's revolt against his uncle, Sharad Pawar. The Thackeray Sena aligns with Sharad Pawar's NCP and the Congress under the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, facing off against the BJP-aligned Mahayuti alliance, which includes Shinde's faction.

This internal conflict within major political entities adds a layer of intrigue to the upcoming state assembly elections, making Maharashtra one of the most closely watched battlegrounds.

Despite the recent heavy rains in Mumbai, which may lead to muddy conditions at the rally venues, Sena leader Sanjay Raut confidently stated that the weather would not disrupt the day's events.

This determination mirrors the broader political battle in Maharashtra, where both factions are eager to assert their dominance and claim the true legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray. In the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, the Uddhav faction gain upper hand as the MVA won 30 out of 48 seats.

However, the recent setbacks faced by the Congress in Haryana has cast a shadow on the MVA's confidence. The Thackeray Sena's criticism of the Congress for not accommodating allies has sparked a debate on the dynamics of coalition politics, with the Maharashtra Congress unit emphasizing the unique political realities of each state.

Amidst this political jostling, the BJP and the Mahayuti alliance are buoyant about their prospects, with Shinde's faction claiming the mantle of Balsaheb Thackeray's true successor.

Adding another dimension to the political scene is Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil, who has captured public attention with his hunger strike for reservations for the Maratha community. While Patil has not made any explicit political endorsements, his activism has placed both the MVA and Mahayuti on high alert. His recent demand for reservation before the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect underscores the complex interplay of caste, politics, and policy in Maharashtra.

As the election dates for Maharashtra and Jharkhand loom, likely slated for mid-November, the Dussehra rallies serve as a prelude to an intense electoral battle. With both Sena factions vying for supremacy and the wider political alliances sharpening their strategies, Maharashtra stands at a crossroads, awaiting a decisive moment that could reshape its political landscape.
