Maharashtra Police to Investigate Rahul Solapurkar's Controversial Comments on Shivaji Maharaj
Maharashtra's deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, announced that Pune police are investigating actor Rahul Solapurkar's remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's 1666 escape from Agra. Solapurkar claimed in a podcast that Shivaji Maharaj bribed Mughal officials to escape, contradicting the popular tale of hiding in a sweet basket. This statement has upset some groups in Maharashtra.

Solapurkar, known for his roles in Marathi films, has apologised for using the term "bribe" and offending those who hold Chhatrapati Shivaji in high regard. He also stepped down as a trustee of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) following demands from Maratha organisations. The controversy has sparked significant attention across the state.
Police Investigation into Controversial Remarks
Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed receiving a complaint against Solapurkar. The police are currently verifying the details of the complaint. The investigation will determine if any legal action is necessary based on the actor's comments. The situation has drawn widespread public interest and scrutiny.
Ajit Pawar emphasised that Maharashtra will not accept any derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He urged individuals to refrain from making such statements. "The people of Maharashtra will not tolerate any defaming remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.....Such statements should be avoided," Pawar stated to reporters.
Historical Context and Public Reaction
The historical event in question occurred in 1666 when Shivaji Maharaj and his son Sambhaji escaped from Agra Fort after being detained during a tense visit to the Mughal court. The traditional narrative suggests they hid in a basket of sweets to flee, a story cherished by many as a symbol of cunning and bravery.
The use of the word "bribe" by Solapurkar has been perceived as disrespectful by some organisations, leading to calls for accountability. The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding historical figures and narratives in Maharashtra, where Shivaji Maharaj is revered as a legendary warrior king.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to address the concerns raised by Solapurkar's remarks. The outcome will likely influence public discourse on how historical events are interpreted and discussed in contemporary settings.
