PM Modi's First Reaction After Indus Water Treaty Suspension: Says India's Water WIll Stay In India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday gave first public reaction on India's decision to suspend Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. During an event organized by ABP News, PM Modi said India's rightful share of water will no longer be allowed to flow out of the country. "Earlier, even India's rightful share of water used to flow out; now, India's water will flow for India, stay for India, and serve India," he stated. This declaration marks a pivotal moment in India's stance towards its neighbor, particularly in the context of ongoing issues related to cross-border terrorism.

The decision to suspend this longstanding water-sharing agreement, initially brokered by the World Bank in 1960, came on the heels of a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 civilians. In response to persistent concerns over cross-border terrorism, India's government, led by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)-the apex national security body-resolved to impose punitive measures against Pakistan. Officials have clarified that the suspension of the treaty will persist until Pakistan ceases its support for cross-border terrorism.

India's Assertive Stance on Cross-border Terrorism

India's unprecedented move to pause the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty underscores a major shift in its diplomatic posture towards Pakistan. This is the first time since the treaty's inception that India has officially halted its application, signaling a firmer stance on issues of national security and cross-border terrorism. Despite previous calls for a review of the treaty due to ongoing tensions, it had remained in place, untouched for decades. The recent decision reflects a broader strategy to address and counteract terrorism emanating from across the border.

A Departure from Past Hesitations

Prime Minister Modi also took the opportunity to critique previous administrations for their cautious approach to making decisive moves, suggesting that such hesitancy stemmed from concerns over international perception, electoral consequences, and political stability. "There was a time when, before taking any essential step, people used to think what the world would think... They used to think whether they would get a vote, and whether their seat would be safe. Because of these reasons, major reforms were delayed. No country can move forward like this. The country moves forward when we keep the nation first," Modi articulated. This reflection indicates a departure from past governance, where decisive action, particularly in the realm of international treaties and security, was often delayed or avoided.

The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan represents a bold step by India in asserting its rights and addressing security concerns. It not only highlights India's firm stance on the use of its natural resources but also signals a readiness to take stronger measures against cross-border terrorism. As the situation develops, the international community and neighboring countries will closely watch the implications of this policy change on India-Pakistan relations and regional stability.
