PM Modi Welcomes Shubhanshu Shukla Back After Historic ISS Mission: ‘Inspired a Billion Dreams’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday officially welcomed Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla back to Earth after his groundbreaking space mission, hailing it as a moment of national pride and a milestone in India's space journey.
In a statement issued shortly after the splashdown of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) capsule, PM Modi said:

"I join the nation in welcoming Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as he returns to Earth from his historic mission to Space. As India's first astronaut to have visited the International Space Station, he has inspired a billion dreams through his dedication, courage and pioneering spirit."
Shukla's mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) marked a historic first for India, making him the first Indian astronaut to travel to the ISS, and only the second Indian in space, following Rakesh Sharma's 1984 mission.
Mission Highlights
The Ax-4 mission, a collaborative effort between Axiom Space, NASA, ISRO, and SpaceX, saw the crew spend nearly 18 days in orbit, during which they completed 288 orbits around Earth, covering a distance of approximately 12.2 million kilometers.
The mission concluded successfully with the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft splashing down at around 3:00 PM IST on July 15, marking the safe return of the four-member international crew, including Shukla.
National Significance
Prime Minister Modi praised the mission's impact on the nation's scientific outlook, describing it as a major boost to India's space ambitions.
"This mission is another milestone towards our own Human Space Flight Mission - Gaganyaan," the Prime Minister said, referring to ISRO's upcoming indigenous crewed spaceflight project.
Shukla's journey has sparked widespread excitement across the country, especially among young Indians, and is being seen as a pivotal step in preparing India for long-duration space missions under the Gaganyaan programme.
Shubhanshu Shukla: A National Hero
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is a decorated pilot with the Indian Air Force, selected and trained under ISRO's astronaut programme. Representing India on the international stage, Shukla joined three other astronauts on the Ax-4 mission, making a global mark while advancing national interests.
Scientific Contributions
During his stay aboard the ISS, Shukla and the crew conducted around 60 scientific experiments, including at least seven developed by ISRO. These experiments, spanning material science, space medicine, and life sciences, are expected to yield valuable data for India's future missions, particularly Gaganyaan.
A Moment of Pride
The Ax-4 mission and Shukla's participation have been widely covered by both national and international media, with many calling it a watershed moment in India's space exploration history. As the country sets its sights on a more prominent role in space science and technology, Shukla's mission is being hailed not just as a personal achievement, but a symbol of India's growing capability and global stature in space exploration.
