PM Modi Takes Stock of Flood Situation in Delhi, Assure Centre's Support In Relief Work

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Saturday to take stock of the flood situation in the capital.

After returning from his visits to France and the United Arab Emirates, PM Modi discussed the status of the rising water level in the Yamuna River and assessed the efforts being made to mitigate the situation with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

PM Modi also spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation.

Earlier, the prime minister had already contacted Home Minister Amit Shah and the Delhi Lieutenant Governor to assess the situation.

The water level in the Yamuna had breached the 208-meter mark, causing widespread flooding in Delhi.

The Delhi government said that the flood situation is expected to improve by Sunday as the water level in the Yamuna is gradually receding.

Atishi, the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) minister, stated that measures are being taken to pump out water, clean roads, and restore traffic movement as the water level decreases.

However, later in the day, heavy rainfall occurred in Delhi and other parts of the National Capital Region, raising concerns about a potential further increase in the Yamuna's water level.

Waterlogging led to traffic jams in several areas, prompting the Delhi Traffic Police to issue advisories regarding disrupted traffic areas due to the rainfall and waterlogging.

The rise in the Yamuna's water level was a result of excessive water discharge from Haryana's Hathinikund Barrage on Thursday, causing several areas in Delhi to be submerged under water. The water level had reached a record high of 208.62 meters.
