PM Modi Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel In J&K, Will Connect Sonmarg Year-Round

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, ensuring year-round accessibility to the Sonamarg tourist destination.

The Prime Minister arrived at Srinagar airport at approximately 10:45 am before heading to Sonamarg for the opening of the strategic tunnel, which holds significant importance for both tourism and defence, according to officials.

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had arrived in Srinagar the previous day to prepare for the event.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi was joined by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The 6.5 km two-lane tunnel, connecting Gagangir and Sonamarg, was built at a cost exceeding ₹2,700 crore and includes a 7.5-metre-wide emergency escape route.

Situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, the Z-Morh tunnel significantly enhances year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg. It also facilitates the route to Leh, bypassing areas prone to landslides and avalanches.

Prime Minister Modi, marking his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since the assembly elections held in September and October, also met with construction workers. His visit acknowledged their commitment and efforts in completing this remarkable engineering feat despite the challenging conditions.

Construction of the Z-Morh tunnel commenced in May 2015 and was completed in 2024, with the tunnel becoming fully operational following its soft opening in February 2024.

Alongside the ongoing Zojila tunnel project, the Z-Morh tunnel ensures seamless connectivity to the Baltal and Ladakh regions, supporting both civilian and military traffic.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology and real-time updates, the Z-Morh tunnel establishes a new benchmark for infrastructure in the region, significantly enhancing the travel experience.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which oversaw the project, described the tunnel as a transformative development for the region. The NHIDCL highlighted that the tunnel not only connects Gagangir and Sonamarg but also unlocks the region's potential for trade and tourism.
