PM Modi Inaugurates Developmental Projects in Agatti, Lakshadweep

Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Agatti, Lakshadweep, marked a significant milestone in the islands development journey. Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi highlighted the numerous developmental projects completed over the past decade and reaffirmed the governments commitment to the progress of Lakshadweep.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Agatti Island in Lakshadweep on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, to inaugurate and dedicate various development projects worth over Rs 1,150 crore. During his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the immense potential of Lakshadweep and acknowledged the neglect the islands faced after independence. He emphasized the government's commitment to the progress and development of the union territory.

Addressing Infrastructure Deficiencies

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the weak port infrastructure, despite shipping being the lifeline of Lakshadweep. He also mentioned the challenges in education, health, and access to petrol and diesel. The government is now actively addressing these challenges and working towards the holistic development of the islands.

Enhancing Seafood Processing and Exports

The Prime Minister expressed optimism about the newly introduced ice plant at Agatti, which will enhance seafood processing possibilities on the island. He mentioned the completion of several development projects in Agatti over the past 10 years, including the creation of modern facilities for fishermen. The establishment of an airport and an ice plant has opened up new avenues for seafood export and processing, leading to increased income for fishermen.

New Development Projects

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a solar plant and an aviation fuel depot to meet the electricity and energy needs of Lakshadweep. He also spoke about providing tapped water connections to all houses on Agatti Island and reiterated the government's efforts to ensure houses, toilets, electricity, and cooking gas for the poor. These projects aim to improve the quality of life for the people of Lakshadweep.

Transformational Infrastructure Initiatives

In a significant move, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project, which aims to overcome the challenge of slow internet speed on Lakshadweep Island. This project will increase internet speed from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps, enabling faster and more reliable internet services, telemedicine, e-governance, educational initiatives, digital banking, and digital literacy.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, which will produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water daily. He will also dedicate the Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in all households on the Agatti and Minicoy islands, ensuring access to clean drinking water.

Other Development Projects

Other projects to be inaugurated include the solar power plant at Kavaratti, the first-ever battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep; the laying of the foundation stone for the renovation of the primary health care facility in Kalpeni; and the construction of five model Anganwadi centres (nand ghars) in the five islands of Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti, and Minicoy.
